1Password Unveils Passkey Support for Enhanced Security

1Password introduces official support for passkeys, offering secure login technology. Its available on desktop browsers and iOS devices, with Android support in progress. Pricing starts at $3/month.

1Password, the renowned password management solution, has unveiled its official support for passkeys, a cutting-edge login technology. The company made this significant announcement in a blog post on Wednesday. While passkeys have been available to 1Password users in beta form since June, they are now rolling out the feature to a wider audience.

To leverage passkeys on your desktop device, you'll need to download the 1Password extension. This extension is compatible with popular browsers like Chrome and Safari, as well as some lesser-known options such as LinuEdge and Brave. Regrettably, Firefox is not yet supported, but 1Password assures its users that support for Firefox is on the horizon.

Mobile users can also take advantage of passkeys on their iPhones or iPads, provided their devices are running iOS 17 or iPadOS 17. On the Android front, 1Password is working in collaboration with Google to make passkeys available on Android 14 through APIs. However, the exact timeline for this Android integration remains uncertain.

It's important to note that this update does not include the option to replace your account's master password with a passkey, a feature that 1Password has been teasing since February. Nevertheless, users can explore a public directory to identify third-party sites that support the passkey protocol. Notable platforms compatible with this login technology include Adobe, Amazon, Nintendo, PayPal, and Okta, among others.

1Password offers individual subscriptions starting at just $3 per month, granting access across all your devices along with 1GB of storage. Families or groups with multiple users can opt for a family subscription at $5 per month. As part of its official rollout, 1Password is also extending control to business clients using the 1Password Business version. Businesses can now manage when their team members can start using this tool, a feature available with the $8-a-month business subscription. This control can be accessed through the policies tab within the platform's settings menu.

With this significant update, 1Password continues to enhance its password management services, making it more secure and user-friendly for individuals, families, and businesses alike.
