Cash Compensation for Fortnite Players in Epic Games Settlement

Fortnite players and parents may receive cash payments in a settlement with Epic Games over deceptive practices. Eligible individuals can apply for refunds online by January 17, 2024.

In a recent development, Fortnite players, and in some instances, their parents, may be entitled to receive monetary compensation as part of a settlement reached between Epic Games, the company behind the popular game, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This move comes after the FTC's announcement that it has initiated the process of notifying individuals who may be eligible for compensation, following the finalization of a settlement in March. The settlement revolves around allegations that Epic Games utilized "dark patterns and other deceptive practices" to deceive players into making unwanted in-game purchases.

This complaint, originally disclosed in December 2022, asserted that Epic Games employed various design tactics aimed at enticing consumers of all ages to make unintended in-game purchases. As part of the settlement, Epic Games agreed to a substantial payout of $245 million, as reported by FLuzala. Additionally, the complaint highlighted that the company made it effortless for minors to accumulate charges without parental consent and even restricted the accounts of consumers who contested unauthorized charges with their credit card providers.

If you believe you may be eligible for a refund, you must meet certain criteria, including being at least 18 years old to complete a claim form. For individuals under 18, a parent or guardian must complete the claim forms on their behalf. To initiate the refund process, visit www.forniterefund.com/file-a-claim and ensure you have either a claim number or your Epic Account ID ready.

The deadline for submitting refund claims is set for January 17, 2024. It's important to note that the amount you receive as compensation will depend on various factors, including the number of individuals who file claims.

As of now, the FTC has not provided a specific mailing date for payments, but they will keep their website updated with relevant information. For additional details or assistance with your claim, you can contact them at 1-833-915-0880 or via email at [email protected].
